United States Army Medical Department Museum, Military medical museum in Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, United States.
The United States Army Medical Department Museum is a military museum on the grounds of Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, tracing the history of US Army medicine from 1775 to the present. It holds original equipment, uniforms, vehicles, photographs, and films covering multiple periods of American military service.
The institution was founded in 1862 in Washington as a medical research and collection center, then moved to Fort Sam Houston in 1946 to gain more exhibition space. The move to Texas allowed the collection to grow and be displayed on a much larger scale.
The museum pays tribute to medics and nurses who saved lives under fire, making their work visible and concrete for visitors today. Many of the objects on display belonged to real people who served, which gives the collections a personal and human quality.
The museum is free to enter and sits on the active military base of Fort Sam Houston, so a valid photo ID is required at the gate. Visitors who want to see the outdoor vehicle displays should wear comfortable shoes, as the grounds involve walking on open terrain.
An original hospital railroad car stands on the outdoor grounds, used to treat wounded soldiers during long troop movements by train. It is one of the few surviving examples of this type of mobile medical unit, which once played a central role in wartime care.
