Chinese Consulate-General, Houston, Former Chinese diplomatic mission in Montrose district, Houston, United States
The Chinese Consulate-General in Houston was a diplomatic facility located on Montrose Boulevard that served eight southern states and Puerto Rico. The building provided visa processing, passport renewal, and notarial services for Chinese citizens across the region.
The facility opened in November 1979 as the first Chinese diplomatic mission established in the United States following the normalization of relations between the two nations. It played a key role in building diplomatic presence in that part of the country.
The consulate served as a hub where student exchange programs took place and Chinese language learning was supported across the region. People from throughout the South came here to participate in cultural events and maintain connections to China.
The building was located in the Montrose neighborhood and was accessible to visitors seeking services during business hours. Staff members assisted in both English and Chinese, making it easier for residents from different backgrounds to complete their applications and requests.
The facility was suddenly closed in July 2020 with documents burned in barrels, creating major diplomatic tensions between the two countries. This action led the United States to close its own consulate in Chengdu in retaliation.
