BG Group Place, 46-floor skyscraper in Downtown Houston, United States
BG Group Place is a 46-story, 630 ft (192 m) tower at 811 Main in Downtown Houston, completed in February 2011. Its blue-tinted glass curtain wall is set in a dense grid of mullions, with a recessed vertical slot and a rectangular cutout near the top on one side. Glass fins act as sunshades, and the lobby ceiling reaches 30 ft, continuing through the second floor and half of the third.
The building was completed in 2011, marking the first major addition to Houston's skyline since 1987. Its construction represented a significant moment in the city's modern architectural development.
The tower's name comes from BG Group Plc, which became anchor tenant after leasing 164,000 sq ft, and it was earlier called MainPlace. Its core signage and primary monument were made by Ad Display Sign Systems. Today its offices house firms such as KPMG, Citi, Baker Hostetler, Latham & Watkins and Reed Smith.
The building connects to Houston's underground tunnel system, making it easy to navigate the downtown area during bad weather without going outside. The spacious floor plans with high ceilings show how modern office buildings use open layouts to maximize usable space.
The 39th-floor skygarden is not open to the public, and the top floor of the parking garage is fully gardened to soak up rainwater. Water condensed by the building's air-conditioning system irrigates those plants, and glass fins act as sunshades to cut cooling demand.
