Greenway Plaza is a commercial district in southwestern Houston that spans 52 acres and houses ten office towers. These buildings are linked by air-conditioned walkways, tunnels, and underground parking facilities that form a connected complex.
The district was developed in 1973 by Kenneth L. Schnitzer as Houston's first mixed-use complex of its kind. This project transformed vacant land into a major business center and shaped how the city expanded in this direction.
The area is home to Lakewood Church, which operates from the former Compaq Center and serves one of the nation's largest religious congregations. The space has become a spiritual gathering point that draws visitors from across the region.
The location sits directly on Interstate 69 and falls within the Interstate 610 loop, about 5 miles west of Downtown. The connected covered walkways and air-conditioned passages make it easy to get around even in hot weather or rain.
The complex contains roughly 4.4 million square feet of office space, making it one of the largest integrated business developments of its era. The extensive tunnel and walkway network was an innovation that later became a model for many other cities.
