The county, established in 1887 and organized in 1927, received its name from William Carey Crane, a former president of Baylor University.
The Museum of the Desert Southwest in Crane maintains collections of regional artifacts and documents the development of the local oil industry.
The Crane County Commissioners' Court conducts meetings twice monthly, on the second and fourth Tuesday at 10:00 AM for public administration.
Since the discovery of oil deposits, the county has produced over 1.5 billion barrels of oil, making it a major contributor to Texas energy production.
