Monahans Sandhills State Park, State park in western Texas, United States.
The park extends across 3,840 acres of sand dunes reaching heights of 70 feet above the semi-arid ecosystem of Llano Estacado.
The Texas State Parks Board established this protected area in 1957 through a 99-year lease agreement with the Sealy-Smith Foundation.
Native American tribes utilized the sand hills for centuries, leaving behind artifacts that reveal their connection to this land.
Visitors can rent sand disks at the Dunagan Visitor Center to surf down the dunes throughout the designated recreation areas.
The Havard oak, a native shrub, develops extensive root systems beneath the sand dunes to access groundwater while remaining small above ground.
