Blanco Canyon, Canyon in Floyd County and Crosby County, Texas.
Blanco Canyon is a gorge in northwestern Texas that cuts through the flat high plains known as the Llano Estacado, running along the border of Floyd and Crosby counties. The canyon walls grow taller as the terrain drops, exposing layers of rock and sediment along the sides.
In the 1870s, US military forces established camps near the canyon as part of a push to take control of the southern high plains. That military presence opened the way for ranchers and farmers who began settling the surrounding land in the following decades.
The Plains Baptist Assembly uses part of the canyon as a year-round gathering ground for religious events, and has done so since 1948. The site sits directly within the gorge, giving it a sheltered setting unlike any typical meeting ground in the surrounding flatlands.
Two roads cross the canyon in different directions, making it easy to get a general sense of the terrain without leaving your vehicle. Those who want to explore deeper should wear sturdy footwear, as the ground can be uneven in places.
The White River runs through the gorge and feeds a strip of greenery that stands out sharply against the dry plains above. This moist corridor supports wildlife and plant life rarely seen in the surrounding flatlands.
