Downs Field, Historic baseball stadium in Austin, United States.
Downs Field is a baseball stadium in Austin with preserved wooden grandstands and a playing field located at the intersection of 12th Street and Springdale Road. The facility maintains its original structural design and currently serves the Huston-Tillotson University baseball teams.
The property was donated to Samuel Huston College in 1914 and developed into a baseball stadium in the late 1920s. It was relocated to its current location in 1954 to become the university's home field.
The field takes its name from Reverend Karl Downs, an important leader at Samuel Huston College. It served as a gathering place for African American athletes during segregation in Texas.
Visitors can access the grounds and view the preserved wooden structures up close. The best times to visit are outside of Huston-Tillotson University game schedules.
The field was the setting for the 1942 Prairie View Interscholastic League State Championship, when L.C. Anderson High School secured an important victory there. This event highlights the venue's role in African American sports history.
