Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site

Fanthorp Inn is a historic lodging facility in Anderson situated on 6 acres of land with 17 rooms built in rustic style. The structures feature cedar log construction with clapboard siding and are furnished to reflect the period of operation.

English immigrant Henry Fanthorp established the inn in 1834 and expanded it through 1850 while serving as the region's first postmaster. The facility became a vital stopping point along travel and trade routes connecting settlements.

The inn served as the community's social hub where travelers and locals gathered to share news and connect with one another. It functioned as more than lodging, becoming a place where people conducted business and civic affairs together.

Visitors can participate in guided tours showing the furnished historic rooms, with select dates offering stagecoach rides during special events. It helps to check ahead for available activities since offerings vary by season.

Vice President Kenneth Anderson of the Republic of Texas spent his final days at the inn in 1845. This connection to early state history makes the site an overlooked witness to Texas' past.
