East Texas, Geographic region in eastern Texas, United States.

East Texas is a region in the eastern part of Texas in the United States, characterized by dense pine forests, hills, and numerous lakes. The area covers 41 counties within the Piney Woods zone and forms a contrast to the drier western parts of the state.

Tribes such as the Caddo and Cherokee settled here before European colonists arrived in the 19th century and established agriculture and timber industries. The discovery of the East Texas Oil Field in the early 20th century transformed the rural economy into one of the largest petroleum production regions in North America.

Wooden houses and church buildings define many towns, while life often revolves around Friday night games and gatherings in community halls. Regional restaurants serve fried chicken and sweet tea in a style that blends Southern hospitality with rural tradition.

Main highways and regional airports in Tyler and Longview connect the towns, while visiting times are possible throughout the year. Temperatures allow activities in forests and at lakes in all seasons, though summer becomes humid and warm.

Derricks still stand today among pines and along country roads, silent witnesses to an oil extraction that began in the 1930s and drew thousands of people into the forests. Some towns preserve museums with old drilling equipment and photographs from that era, when oil barons and workers transformed the landscape.
