M. A. Benton House, Victorian residence in Fort Worth, Texas
The M. A. Benton House is a one-and-a-half-story Victorian residence featuring ornate spindle work and cross gables topped with a hipped roof. The structure contains six rooms arranged around a central hall, and retains its original cypress wood construction.
Built in 1898 by a Kansas City builder for tobacco merchant Meredith A. Benton and his wife Ella Belle, the house stands among Fort Worth's oldest residences. It received recognition as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1971 and was subsequently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The residence carries the name of its original owner Meredith A. Benton, who established his family in the community and left a mark on local development. The decorative details and craftsmanship visible throughout reflect the prosperity that tobacco merchants enjoyed in Fort Worth at the time.
The property remains in private family ownership today, continuously maintained by Benton descendants. As an active family residence, visitors can view it from the street and appreciate its architectural features from outside.
Ella Belle Benton played a key role in developing the Rose Gardens, now part of Fort Worth Botanic Garden, while she lived here. Her efforts transformed the vision into one of the region's most-visited botanical spaces for residents and tourists alike.
