Carswell Air Force Base, Military airbase in Fort Worth, Texas
Carswell Air Force Base is a major military airfield located northwest of Fort Worth with multiple runways and facilities for aircraft maintenance and storage. The installation operates as a joint reserve base today, hosting several active and reserve military units on its grounds.
The base was established in 1941 as Fort Worth Army Air Field and served as a training center during World War II. It was renamed in 1948 to honor a decorated pilot from that era.
The base received its name in 1948 to honor Major Horace S. Carswell Jr., who earned the Medal of Honor for his actions in World War II.
The base remains an active military installation with restricted public access, so advance permission is required to visit. Visitors should contact the main gate and bring valid identification documents.
On the western side of the installation sits a large aircraft manufacturing plant that produced heavy bombers throughout the Cold War. The factory turned out some of the most strategically important aircraft in U.S. aviation history during that period.
