Highland Village, city in Texas, United States
Highland Village is a city in Denton County located south of Dallas, spreading along the shores of Lewisville Lake. The community consists mostly of residential neighborhoods with single-family homes interspersed with parks and open spaces.
The city was founded in 1963 when approximately 100 professionals settled there seeking a quieter alternative to city life. It experienced rapid growth during the 1970s and 1980s, and in 1986 it became a Home Rule City with greater local control.
The location is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) southeast of Denton and 20 kilometers (12 miles) northwest of Dallas near Interstate 35E. Three elementary schools and one middle school serve families, while a train station established in 2011 provides commuting options to Dallas and Denton.
According to local legend, the outlaw Sam Bass used the hilly wooded terrain as a hiding place, adding a touch of historical adventure to the area. Today a local history book preserves these and other stories from the city's early days.
