Tioga, town in Grayson County, Texas, United States
Tioga is a small town in Grayson County in northern Texas, about 20 miles southwest of Sherman, developed along railroad lines when the railway arrived in 1881. The town sits on a highway and maintains a grid of streets with historic buildings from its early decades.
Founded in 1881 when the railroad arrived, the town was named after water from a local well used by workers. In 1884 a blacksmith discovered that water from a well had healing properties, sparking the rise of a mineral water industry that dominated growth through the early 1900s.
The name comes from an Iroquois word meaning "swift current," referencing the mineral springs that became central to community life as visitors traveled far to experience their healing properties. Local churches and family traditions still shape how residents connect with one another today.
The town is easy to reach by car from Sherman and offers quiet streets for walking to explore buildings at your own pace. Visit during mild weather when you can comfortably stroll the main roads and view the storefronts without rushing.
Gene Autry, the famous singer and cowboy actor, grew up here working on the railroad before finding fame, and the town even tried to rename itself Autry Springs in 1937 to honor his connection, though the name never became official. His family connection to the local cemetery keeps his memory alive in the community.
