Macondo Prospect, Oil field in Gulf of Mexico, United States.
The Macondo Prospect is an offshore oil field located in the Gulf of Mexico, roughly 66 kilometers from Louisiana's coastline at a depth of around 5,000 feet (1,500 meters). It sits within the Mississippi Canyon block 252, where the seafloor drops into a deep basin.
BP acquired the drilling rights in March 2008 and began developing the site using the Deepwater Horizon rig. In April 2010, an explosion killed eleven workers and triggered a months-long oil spill.
The oil field demonstrates the complexity of deep-water drilling operations, requiring advanced technology and specialized knowledge for resource extraction.
Access to the site is restricted to authorized personnel only, as it remains an industrial offshore location. The area lies roughly 130 miles (209 kilometers) southeast of New Orleans in international waters.
The reservoir holds oil mixed with methane that remains liquid under high pressure at depth. When pumped to the surface, this mixture loses around 37 percent of its volume due to pressure drop.
