Saint Louis Cemetery No. 3, Historic cemetery near Bayou St. John, New Orleans, United States
The cemetery spans five complete squares and one smaller square, featuring 5,000 mausoleums, 3,000 wall vaults, and approximately 2,000 family tombs across its grounds.
Following an 1848 legislative act, the cemetery wardens purchased land from Felix Labatut for $15,000, establishing the burial ground which opened in 1854.
The cemetery incorporates architectural elements representing New Orleans traditions, with above-ground burial structures necessitated by the region's high water table.
Located at 3421 Esplanade Avenue, the cemetery maintains specific visiting hours and requires visitors to follow established guidelines for preservation purposes.
Three main aisles, originally named Saint Louis, Saint Peter, and Saint Paul, were later renamed to honor bishops and archbishops of the diocese.
