Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery, Historic fraternal cemetery on Canal Street, New Orleans, United States
Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery is a fraternal burial ground located at the intersection of Canal Street and City Park Avenue in New Orleans. The 1.5-acre site sits adjacent to St. Patrick Cemetery Number 2 and serves as a resting place for members of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
The Grand Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows purchased this land in 1847 for 700 dollars and officially dedicated it in 1849. Its location above the floodplain has protected the cemetery from water damage since its establishment.
Cast iron gates display fraternal symbols including widows with children, beehives, all-seeing eyes, the world, and a cornucopia that represent the values of the Odd Fellows. These symbols tell visitors about the principles and community spirit that founded this burial ground.
The cemetery is not open to the public, but visitors interested in the site can contact the Grand Lodge of Louisiana Independent Order of Odd Fellows for information. Reaching out before planning a visit is recommended to understand current access guidelines and availability.
The site sits above the floodplain and has managed to avoid the major flooding that has repeatedly affected New Orleans throughout its history. This elevated location is one reason the monuments and graves have survived in relatively good condition.
