Longue Vue House and Gardens, National Historic Landmark and botanical garden in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Description

Longue Vue House is a three-story Classical Revival mansion surrounded by eight acres of landscaped gardens in New Orleans. Each side of the house features different architectural details that connect with the specific garden areas around it.

History

The Stern family established the property in 1921, later bringing in landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman to design the gardens. Her work beginning in 1934 transformed the grounds into the planted spaces seen today.

Culture

The rooms display furnishings and artworks that show how wealthy families lived during the twentieth century. Walking through, you notice the choices they made in decoration and how they arranged their daily spaces.

Practical

The property is accessible to visitors, with guided tours available as well as the option to explore independently. Plan your visit for cooler months, as the gardens and grounds require time to walk through comfortably.

Did you know?

The house layout was intentionally designed so that each garden view from inside appears completely different. This careful arrangement transforms the visit into a journey through distinct outdoor worlds without stepping outside.
