The Shangri La gardens extend across 252 acres, featuring mixed deciduous forests, cypress tupelo swamps, wetlands, and a central lake with varied wildlife.
H.J. Lutcher Stark established these gardens in 1942, which first opened to the public in 1946 but closed temporarily due to severe cold weather damage.
The botanical gardens contain five distinct plant rooms with over 300 species and four separate areas displaying sculptures integrated within natural settings.
The center operates Wednesday through Sunday, providing educational programs, guided tours, and workshops focused on environmental conservation and gardening techniques.
This facility earned recognition as the first project in Texas to receive Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council under LEED-NC standards.
