Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, Botanical garden in Orange, Texas.

Shangri La Botanical Gardens is a nature center spanning 252 acres with mixed deciduous forests, cypress tupelo swamps, wetlands, and a central lake. The lake supports diverse wildlife populations that visitors can observe as they explore the grounds.

The gardens were founded in 1942 by H.J. Lutcher Stark and opened to the public in 1946. A temporary closure followed due to severe cold weather damage in the early years.

The gardens feature five distinct plant rooms with over 300 species and integrate sculptures throughout the grounds. You can encounter artworks placed naturally within the landscape as you walk through different sections.

The center operates Wednesday through Sunday with guided tours, educational programs, and workshops available. Plan to wear comfortable shoes and allow time for walking through the varied habitats at your own pace.

The property became the first project in Texas to receive Platinum certification under LEED standards. This recognition reflects a commitment to sustainable building and operational practices.
