Louisiana State University is a public research institution in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The grounds cover more than 800 hectares with over 250 buildings, including lecture halls, laboratories, research centers and libraries.
The institution was founded in 1860 near Pineville and moved its main campus to Baton Rouge in 1926. This relocation enabled substantial expansion and development into a major academic center in the southern United States.
Visitors find five art galleries and four museums on campus where students and local artists exhibit their work. Several performance spaces host concerts and theatrical productions throughout the year, contributing to the cultural life of the city.
The campus is open to the public and visitors can walk between buildings and through the extensive green spaces. Information signage is distributed throughout the grounds, making it easier to navigate different areas.
Near the football stadium there is a habitat for a live Bengal tiger, the official mascot since 1936. The tradition of keeping a real tiger on campus grounds has continued across several generations.
