Mathews Brake National Wildlife Refuge, National Wildlife Refuge in Leflore County, Mississippi.
Mathews Brake National Wildlife Refuge is a protected wetland area in Leflore County covering around 2,418 acres of wooded marsh and the largest brake system in the county. The landscape includes deep water areas and bottomland hardwood forests dominated by oak trees.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service established this refuge in 1980 with an initial land purchase of 803 acres. The site was chosen to protect one of the region's most important wetland ecosystems.
The refuge serves as habitat for numerous wildlife species and migratory birds that depend on wetland ecosystems. Local conservation efforts here support the survival of species that would struggle in other environments.
The refuge offers areas for hunting, fishing, wildlife observation, and photography available during specific seasons. Visitors should follow designated paths and check local regulations before planning their activities.
During winter months, more than 30,000 ducks gather here and the area supports around 200 bird species in total. This concentration of migratory birds makes the refuge a critical stopover point on their seasonal journeys.
