Leaf River Wildlife Management Area, Nature reserve in Perry County, Mississippi.
Leaf River Wildlife Management Area is a large protected forest in Perry County covering more than 40,000 acres of pine woodland. Meandering waterways, oxbow lakes, and thick understory growth create a complex natural landscape throughout the property.
The site was established as a protected area in 1940 by the US Forest Service to conserve regional natural resources. A section of it was designated as wilderness territory in 1984.
The area serves as a learning space where visitors can discover how forests support wildlife and understand the importance of protecting natural habitats. Local communities connect with the land through guided programs that teach conservation methods and how forests function.
Visitors can access the area through marked entry points along Highway 29 south of New Augusta, with directions leading to Benndale Road. Multiple trail options and designated areas help guide people through different sections of the property.
The reserve contains a mix of loblolly pines, shortleaf pines, and understory species including dogwood, redbud, and native honeysuckle that grow in distinct zones. This layered vegetation creates varied habitats that attract different wildlife throughout the seasons.
