Hattiesburg Zoo

Hattiesburg Zoo is an animal facility spread across 12 acres within Kamper Park, where more than 100 animal species live in designed habitats. The site includes various attractions such as rides and water areas for visitors.

John Kamper donated 40 acres of land in 1908 to create a public park, which later allowed the zoo to open in 1950. This foundation came from a generous land gift that made the current facility possible.

The zoo serves as a learning space where school groups from the area come to observe animals and explore nature together. This educational role shapes how the place functions and makes it meaningful beyond just a recreational destination.

The zoo is laid out in a way that is easy to walk through, with different pathways through the grounds for various interests. It is helpful to wear comfortable shoes and bring enough water, especially on warmer days.

Visitors can feed giraffes each morning, with spots limited to 15 people, making this a memorable highlight for many guests. This direct contact with the animals often stays with people as one of the most unforgettable moments of their visit.
