Eaton Elementary School
Eaton Elementary School, Historic elementary school in Hattiesburg, United States.
Eaton Elementary School is a two-story brick building constructed in 1905 that exemplifies Romanesque Revival design with distinctive architectural features. The front facade displays twelve round-arch window frames, and the structure rises under a traditional hip roof design.
The school was erected in 1905 and served its community for over eight decades before operations ceased in the late 1980s. In 2008, the building earned designation as a place listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The building showcases Romanesque Revival design elements that were favored in early education architecture and remain visible today. The arched windows and decorative brickwork reflect how school buildings of that era were designed to convey permanence and respectability in their communities.
The building sits on McInnis Avenue and saw substantial additions in 1949 that included new classrooms and a cafeteria space. Visitors can view the exterior to understand the building's structure and how it evolved to accommodate more students over time.
The school bears the name of George Eaton, an early Hattiesburg settler who donated the land for the building's construction. This naming honors a local landowner whose contribution helped establish an important educational facility in the growing town.
