Longleaf Trace, Rail trail in South Mississippi, United States.
The Longleaf Trace is a paved rail trail in South Mississippi extending 44 miles from Hattiesburg to Prentiss. The 10-foot-wide surface passes through forests and rural towns along its course.
The route follows a railroad built in the 1800s that once supported the timber industry through the early 1900s. In 2000 the abandoned rail line was converted into a public recreation trail.
The route brings together people from different towns who come to exercise and spend time outdoors. This shared pathway has become part of the local identity and encourages residents to move between communities on foot or by bicycle.
Eight covered rest areas with restrooms and vending machines are spaced throughout the route for visitor convenience. The paved surface can be walked or biked year-round and is accessible to most users.
The trail crosses several bridges and passes under an overhead span, creating varied views along the walk. At Epley a dirt riding path branches off to serve horseback riders looking for an alternative route.
