Hattiesburg, Transportation hub in Mississippi, United States
Hattiesburg stretches across two counties in southern Mississippi and forms an urban center with universities and public facilities. Streets show a mix of Victorian facades and modern business buildings along the main routes.
William H. Hardy founded this settlement in 1882 during the expansion of the lumber industry and the railroad network. Over the following decades, the place transformed into a regional center for commerce and education.
The settlement takes its name from Hattie Hardy, wife of the founder, keeping alive her personal connection to the place. Streets in the Historic District show buildings from the Victorian era that now house shops and offices.
The city sits on the main roads that run through southern Mississippi and offers connections to neighboring communities. Visitors to the Historic District can walk between preserved Victorian-era buildings.
Camp Shelby south of town is the largest National Guard training facility east of the Mississippi River and remains in use today. Thousands of soldiers train there each year under realistic conditions on wide open terrain.
