Old Dauphin Way Historic District, Historic residential district in Mobile, Alabama.

The Old Dauphin Way Historic District is a large residential area south of downtown Mobile containing houses built across more than a century. The buildings range from classical mansions to simpler structures, each representing different tastes and times.

Settlement began in the 1830s on land that had once belonged to Spain, with early houses following routes from downtown toward the affluent Spring Hill area. The district continued to grow throughout the 1800s and early 1900s as it attracted residents seeking homes away from the city center.

The name refers to early French colonial routes through Mobile. You can see how grand mansions and modest homes stand side by side, reflecting the mixed neighborhood life that developed across generations.

The neighborhood is easy to explore on foot with wide, level streets and clear paths between buildings. Many older structures now house shops or offices, so you can appreciate the architecture from the street without needing special access.

Some homes display ornate Queen Anne details with intricate woodwork and decorative elements that showcase local craftsmanship from the late 1800s. These detailed embellishments took skilled workers months to complete and remain notable examples of the era's quality.
