United States Marine Hospital, former hospital in Alabama, United States

The United States Marine Hospital in Mobile is a two-story building completed in 1843, designed by architect Frederick Bunnell in the Greek Revival style, and was originally constructed to serve sailors and port workers in need of medical care. The structure features tall columns, clean lines, and a white facade typical of its architectural period.

The hospital was founded in 1843 on land purchased from Joshua Kennedy and initially served sailors and military personnel. During the Civil War, the building was taken over by Confederate forces for wounded soldiers before returning to Union control and undergoing multiple changes in function over subsequent decades.

The building is located on St. Anthony Street in downtown Mobile and is easily accessible for viewing its exterior architecture. The site is now occupied by the Mobile County Health Department, so interior access is typically limited to the public.

Women were employed as nurses at this facility for the first time in 1915, marking a noteworthy shift in how medical work was organized at the time. This development reflects the broader transformation of healthcare professions across America during that era.
