Conecuh National Forest, National forest in southern Alabama, United States.
The Conecuh National Forest covers a large area in southern Alabama, featuring mixed pine and hardwood forests along with extensive lowlands and wetlands. The landscape shifts between drier upland woods and wetter valleys, providing diverse habitats for plants and wildlife.
The forest was designated in 1936 after intensive logging in the early 1900s had cleared large stretches of woodland. Reforestation efforts that followed gradually transformed the depleted land back into productive forest.
The name comes from the Muskogee language and means "land of cane," referring to the reed vegetation found throughout the area. Local communities maintain a deep connection to these woods, which shape the character of their home region.
Visitors will find two main recreation areas with camping facilities, lakes for swimming and fishing, and trails for walking and exploring. The best time to visit is outside the hottest summer months, when the paths are more enjoyable to hike.
The forest contains specialized wetland habitats with carnivorous pitcher plants and hardwood swamps where rare woodpecker species make their homes. These unusual ecosystems are found only in specific regions, making this place special for nature observers.
