St. Agatha's Episcopal Church, Carpenter Gothic church in DeFuniak Springs Historic District, United States
St. Agatha's Episcopal Church sits at 144 Circle Drive and displays the hallmarks of Carpenter Gothic style with pointed arches and steeply pitched rooflines built from wood. The building serves as a centerpiece within the DeFuniak Springs Historic District and continues to operate as an active parish.
Construction began in 1895 after the regional Episcopal bishop identified Protestant families needing a parish in the area. The building took several years to complete and underwent gradual development before becoming fully operational.
The women of the congregation shaped the church's early identity by organizing Easter services in 1896, using flowers from the area to decorate the still-unfinished building. Their initiative established a tradition of active participation that continues to define how the community gathers here today.
The church is open to visitors during service times and welcomes people to experience the interior from the pews. The simple wooden construction allows clear views of the architectural details and the pipe organ housed inside.
A pipe organ built by a parishioner in 1990 remains the only one of its kind in the county and produces sound during services. This handcrafted instrument reflects the ingenuity and devotion of the congregation.
