Meridian, County seat in Lauderdale County, Mississippi, United States
Meridian is a city at the crossing of two railroad lines in eastern Mississippi, with residential neighborhoods and a commercial center. The downtown shows multi-story brick buildings from the early 20th century, while single-family homes and tree-lined streets extend into the surrounding districts.
The city developed rapidly from the 1850s as a railroad junction and was largely destroyed in 1864 during the Civil War. After rebuilding, it grew again as a trading center and gained regional importance for industry and transport.
The Riley Center, housed in a restored 1889 grand opera house, presents performing arts events and educational programs throughout the year.
Downtown can be explored on foot, with the area around Fifth Street gathering shops and eateries. Buses connect the center to the outer areas, and public parking is available near the main streets.
An opera house built in 1889 still stands downtown and now serves as a venue for theater and music. The city also preserves numerous Victorian-style homes dating from the late 19th century.
