Merrehope, Neoclassical mansion in Meridian, United States
Merrehope is a large mansion combining Neoclassical and Italianate architectural styles, featuring tall columns and detailed stonework throughout its structure. The two-story building contains numerous rooms arranged to show how homes of this era were organized and used.
Built in 1858, the building survived the Civil War when it served soldiers from both sides as a shelter and command center. After the conflict ended, it was restored and has remained an important record of that period.
The rooms display furniture and artwork from the 1800s, showing how wealthy families in Mississippi lived and decorated their homes. You can walk through spaces that reflect the daily life and social customs of that era.
Visitors explore the house through guided tours offered regularly throughout the year. It is helpful to contact ahead or check online for current hours and any special access conditions.
Each year the house transforms during the winter holidays with elaborate decorations filling every room. This seasonal display shows familiar spaces in a completely different way and draws visitors from the region.
