Lakewood, Greek Revival mansion in Livingston, US

Lakewood is a two-and-a-half-story Greek Revival house completed in 1840 in Livingston, Alabama. Its brick ground floor carries one and a half wood-frame stories above, with a five-bay facade divided by two-story Doric pilasters and a two-tiered tetrastyle Doric portico at the center. Two curved wrought iron staircases rise from ground level to the upper portico's formal entrance, and a central hallway runs through all levels.

Lakewood was built for Joseph Lake, a North Carolina native, by master builder Hiram W. Bardwell and completed in 1840. Julia Strudwick Tutwiler, a Lake relative, lived there periodically from 1881 to 1910 while president of the adjacent Livingston Normal College. The Historic American Buildings Survey recorded the house in 1936, and it was listed on Alabama's Places in Peril in 2012.

Lakewood's name comes from Joseph Lake, the North Carolina native for whom Hiram W. Bardwell built the house in 1840. From 1881 to 1910 Julia Strudwick Tutwiler, a Lake relative and president of the neighbouring Livingston Normal College, lived in the house periodically. Descendants of the Lake family have owned it ever since.

Lakewood is a private residence still owned by descendants of the Lake family, so it is not open for interior tours; the house is best seen from the adjacent University of West Alabama campus. The two curved wrought iron staircases rise from ground level to the front of the upper portico, a feature visible from outside.

Lakewood's plan is rare in early Alabama architecture: a brick ground floor topped by one and a half wood-frame storeys, with a central hallway on every level. Two curved wrought-iron staircases climb from ground level to the front of the upper portico, leading to the formal entrance. The house was recorded by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1936 and added to Alabama's Places in Peril in 2012.
