The Reuben Davis House is a two-story residence with eight fluted columns forming a Greek Revival portico at its entrance. The building sits within the West Commerce Street Historic District and displays the craftsmanship typical of mid-1800s construction.
History
The house was built in 1847 by D.F. Alexander and underwent significant changes when William Cunningham remodeled it in 1853. Later it served as home to attorney and congressman Reuben Davis, becoming a notable residence in the community.

The residence shows how wealthy Southern landowners of the 1800s chose to build their homes with Classical design elements to display their status. The Greek Revival style was their way of connecting to ancient ideals of beauty and permanence.
