Cottage Hill Historic District

Cottage Hill Historic District is a residential area in Montgomery featuring more than 100 buildings in Late Victorian and Queen Anne styles. The houses spread across an area bounded by Goldthwaite, Maxwell, Holt, and Clayton streets, displaying varied architectural approaches from that period.

The district became an officially protected residential area when it was listed on Alabama's Register of Landmarks in 1975 and the National Register the following year. This recognition helped preserve the area's architecture and its role in the city's development.

The houses here reflect how prosperous residents of Montgomery chose to build and decorate their homes in the late 1800s. Walking through the streets, you can observe the craftsmanship and design preferences that shaped daily life in that era.

The area is best explored on foot since the houses are closely spaced and the streets are easy to navigate. Parking is available at several spots, making it convenient to start your walk and take in the variety of houses at a leisurely pace.

Many houses blend Stick and Eastlake design elements, two trends that overlapped and created a distinctive local character. Walking through, you'll notice how builders mixed both styles, creating something that feels both ornate and handcrafted.
