Winter Place, Renaissance Revival building in Montgomery, Alabama
Winter Place is a residential compound in Montgomery consisting of two connected houses with Renaissance Revival architecture, symmetrical facades, and classical details throughout. Three additional buildings stand on the grounds and complete the ensemble of structures.
The complex began in the 1850s when the North House was built for the Winter family. The South House was added about 20 years later in the 1870s as the property expanded.
The structures demonstrate the architectural preferences of affluent Southern families during the nineteenth century through their design and construction methods.
The property sits in central Montgomery and is easily accessible from the city's main roads. Visitors can walk the grounds and appreciate the exterior architecture and landscape from multiple viewpoints.
Architect Samuel Sloan, who designed the first house in 1851, is believed to have created the plans for the entire complex. This connection gives the site a coherent architectural vision across decades.
