Lochinvar, Historic plantation in Pontotoc County, United States.
Lochinvar is a two-story plantation house in Pontotoc County featuring Greek Revival design with Doric columns and a striking spiral staircase that rises without external support. The structure was built using handmade bricks and displays careful craftsmanship in its architectural details.
Scottish immigrant and merchant Robert Gordon constructed this house in 1836 after purchasing the land from Molly Gunn, a Chickasaw woman. The structure reflects the early plantation era of the 19th century.
The house blends Scottish architectural details with American plantation design, most notably in the carved balcony railings that imitate delicate lace patterns. This mix reflects how settlers brought their cultural traditions into their new homes.
This house is located in a rural setting, so a vehicle is necessary to visit. It is a private historic property, so checking access and visiting arrangements ahead of time is important.
A concealed passageway runs between the interior walls, allowing movement through the house away from public view. This hidden feature is an unusual detail found in few plantation homes of the period.
