Ruffner Mountain Park, Protected area in Birmingham, United States.
Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve is a protected area of over 1,000 acres featuring hardwood forests, abandoned limestone quarries, and roughly 14 miles of hiking trails in Jefferson County. The landscape combines natural woodland with visible traces of past mining and quarrying operations.
The site functioned as iron ore mines and stone quarries until 1953, supplying materials to Birmingham's steel mills during the city's industrial growth. Following the closure of mining operations, the land was gradually converted into a nature preserve.
The Nature Center displays living raptors, snakes, and turtles native to Alabama through its exhibits. Visitors encounter owls and other birds of prey from the region and gain insight into local wildlife.
The preserve is open during daylight hours with parking available for a fee. Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes suited for walking on varied terrain, as trails range from short walks to longer hikes.
The abandoned limestone quarries contain fossils from ancient sea creatures preserved in the rock. Visitors exploring these sites can spot remains of corals, brachiopods, and other organisms dating back millions of years.
