Cemitério dos Pretos Novos, Archaeological burial site in Gamboa district, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The archaeological remains contain bones and artifacts from thousands of enslaved Africans who perished upon arrival at Valongo Wharf between 1769 and 1830.
The cemetery emerged following orders from the Marquis of Lavradio to relocate slave trade operations from Praça XV to Valongo, establishing a designated burial ground.
The site includes a museum with contemporary African-themed art exhibitions and a library containing 600 volumes about Afro-Brazilian and indigenous cultures.
Located at 32-36 Pedro Ernesto Street, the memorial welcomes visitors Tuesday through Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 1 PM.
Glass pyramids installed in 2012 protect and display archaeological findings, including the complete skeleton of a woman identified as Josefina Bakhita.
