Mantena, Municipality in Minas Gerais, Brazil
Mantena is a municipality in Minas Gerais situated at an elevation of 362 meters (1,190 feet) across rolling hills. Small mountains made of pre-Cambrian crystalline rocks form the natural framework of the landscape.
The area was originally a district of Conselheiro Pena and gained its own district status in 1938 as Bom Jesus do Mantena. It became an independent municipality in 1944.
The name comes from the Tupi language and refers to the fertile soil that has long defined this region. This indigenous language connection reflects the agricultural foundation that continues to shape daily life.
The area is served by a bus terminal from the 1980s that runs regular connections to larger cities across Minas Gerais. This is the main way to reach and leave the municipality.
The region experienced territorial disputes with neighboring Espírito Santo during the Contestado conflict. These clashes arose over economic interests in coffee cultivation and logging in contested areas.
