Vigia, Colonial municipality in northeastern Pará, Brazil

Vigia is a municipality in northern Brazil located near the Atlantic coast with access to local waterways. The town functions as a fishing center where fresh catches arrive daily and are distributed to markets.

It was founded in 1616 as a watchtower to control the traffic of ships along regional waters. Over time the settlement shifted from military duties to become a center for fishing and trade.

The annual Cirio celebration brings together residents who participate in processions and religious rituals that express deep devotion. This event remains at the heart of what the community values and remembers.

The fish market is the best place to understand local life and arrives busiest in early morning hours. Visitors should arrive early to see fresh catches and watch locals going about their daily routines.

In the 1970s, unexplained lights in the sky prompted the Brazilian Air Force to conduct an official investigation of the phenomena. Residents witnessed these events and the study became known internationally as a serious scientific inquiry.
