Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, Girls boarding school in Henley on Klip, South Africa.
The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls is a boarding school for girls in Henley on Klip, south of Johannesburg. The campus covers about 21 hectares and includes classrooms, laboratories, a library, a theater, and residential buildings for students.
Oprah Winfrey founded the school after conversations with Nelson Mandela in 2002 and opened it in January 2007. The first 72 students started classes at that time.
The academy follows the Independent Examinations Board curriculum, preparing students from disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve the South African National Senior Certificate.
The school admits only girls from low-income families and operates a strict selection process. Visits are possible only by prior arrangement, as this is an active educational institution.
Every year several thousand girls apply for around 60 places, and the selection process is among the strictest in the region. Most graduates continue their education at universities, often abroad.
