Tower of Terror

Tower of Terror is a steel roller coaster with a vertical drop at Gold Reef City that takes riders through above-ground and below-ground sections. The ride seats eight passengers in two rows and generates significant forces during the underground tunnel section.

The ride opened in December 2001 and underwent a major overhaul in 2006 when the original lift hill was replaced with an elevator system. This change significantly improved the ride's operation and safety features.

The ride incorporates an actual mining tower moved from a local gold mine, honoring Johannesburg's industrial past. Visitors experience this connection to the city's heritage while riding.

Riders should expect intense sensations, especially in the underground section where the forces are strongest. The ride operates in various weather conditions and is designed for easy boarding and exit.

The ride combines a 50-meter vertical drop with a 15-meter subterranean dive, a rare combination on the African continent. Few rides worldwide offer this particular blend of above-ground and underground thrills.
