Piton Dugain, Mountain peak in Les Cafres Plain, Réunion.
Piton Dugain is a mountain summit in the Les Cafres Plain that rises to about 1,755 meters (5,757 feet). It sits east of Bourg-Murat and forms part of the Piton de la Fournaise range.
The peak takes its name from Jean Dugain, an 18th-century hunter who explored the highland regions in search of runaway slaves. His explorations left a lasting mark on the local geography and history.
A small shrine sits at the summit where visitors come to reflect and find stillness in the high altitude. Locals and travelers use this space as a place for quiet contemplation.
The climb demands good fitness and preparation since altitude can be demanding on the body. Bring plenty of water and watch the weather closely, as conditions can change quickly at this elevation.
Jean Dugain's son participated in a historic climb of Piton de la Fournaise in 1801 alongside explorer Jean-Baptiste Bory de Saint-Vincent. This family connection links the peak to one of Reunion's most important scientific expeditions.
