West Moncoeur Island, Nature reserve in Bass Strait, Tasmania, Australia.
West Moncoeur Island is a nature reserve in Bass Strait off Tasmania, composed of granite and covering about 9 hectares. Steep cliffs encircle the island, creating a natural barrier that protects the wildlife living there.
Inspector James Grant discovered the island in 1800 from HMS Lady Nelson and named it after Captain Moncur of the Royal Navy. It was later protected to preserve the seabirds and other wildlife that breed there.
The Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service maintains this protected environment as part of broader conservation efforts within the Rodondo Group archipelago.
The island hosts multiple seabird species such as short-tailed shearwaters, fairy prions, and diving-petrels that raise their young there. These breeding grounds make it valuable for scientific observation and understanding seabird ecology.
The island provides habitat for a substantial colony of Australian fur seals that produce around 250 pups each year. This impressive population is a striking feature that visitors and researchers frequently overlook.
