Clarion Island, Volcanic island in Revillagigedo Archipelago, Mexico
Isla Clarión is a volcanic island in the Revillagigedo Archipelago off Mexico's coast. It features three volcanic peaks that rise from a rugged, barren landscape shaped by volcanic activity.
Spanish explorer Ruy López de Villalobos discovered the island in 1542. It received its current name around 1820 from an American trading vessel operating in the northern Pacific waters.
The Mexican Navy maintains a garrison of nine soldiers on the island to protect its territory and monitor the surrounding marine protected areas.
Access requires special permits from Mexican authorities and travel by sea only. Visitors should prepare for extreme isolation and limited facilities on the island.
The island is home to bird species found nowhere else in the world that have adapted over generations to this remote setting. These evolutionary distinctions make it particularly valuable for scientists and bird watchers.
