Our Lady of Peace Cathedral, Baja California Sur, Catholic cathedral in La Paz, Mexico.
Our Lady of Peace Cathedral is a Catholic church in downtown La Paz with characteristic twin towers and a symmetrical neoclassical facade. The structure combines Romanesque elements with classical proportions and defines the appearance of the historic city center.
Construction of the cathedral began in the nineteenth century under Bishop Francisco Escalante y Moreno, after Jesuits had established earlier missions in the region. The church replaced older religious structures at the site and became the new spiritual center of La Paz.
The baroque altarpieces from the eighteenth century were rescued from demolished missions and show the religious craftsmanship of the colonial period. These artworks blend European and local traditions visible in their carefully carved details.
The cathedral can be visited during daylight hours through the main entrance on the main plaza and holds regular masses throughout the week. Visitors should check mass times before arriving, as these may affect access to certain areas.
The twin towers are visible from various points across the city and serve as visual reference points for many residents and visitors. This prominent role in the city skyline makes them an instantly recognizable landmark of La Paz.
