Cerro de la Calavera

Cerro de la Calavera is a scenic viewpoint above La Paz offering wide views across the city toward the Gulf of California and the surrounding desert landscape. Multiple pathways lead to the summit, each crossing rocky terrain with different levels of steepness.

Since colonial times, the mountain has served as a vital navigation landmark for ships and fishermen entering the waters around La Paz. Its role as a reference point shaped how the area developed as a coastal settlement.

The mountain's name comes from a local tale about two lovers whose story ended on these rocky slopes. Walking here, you can still hear residents share this legend with visitors.

The summit is reachable on foot in roughly 30 minutes at a moderate pace. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is rocky and uneven throughout the climb.

The mountain's profile resembles a skull when viewed from certain angles, which is the origin of its Spanish name. This natural feature is especially visible during sunset.
