J. Paul Getty Museum, Art museum in Los Angeles, United States.

The J. Paul Getty Museum displays European paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, and photographs across two locations: the Getty Center and Getty Villa.

Founded by oil industrialist J. Paul Getty in 1974, the museum received a substantial inheritance of 1.2 billion dollars in the early 1980s.

The museum collection contains pre-20th-century European art, including paintings, drawings, manuscripts, and an extensive collection of ancient Mediterranean artifacts.

The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 17:30, with extended hours until 20:00 on Saturdays, and requires advance timed reservations.

Richard Meier designed the Getty Center using Italian travertine panels, creating a bright modernist structure against the Los Angeles landscape.
