Elkay Apartments, International Style residential complex in Westwood, Los Angeles, California, US.
Elkay Apartments is a five-unit modernist residential complex in Westwood spread across two stories with clean lines and functional forms. The structure demonstrates characteristic design philosophy with open spaces and seamless integration between interior and exterior.
Richard Neutra designed this building in 1948 for violist Louis Kievman, whose initials gave the building its name. This project emerged during Neutra's most productive years in the region, reflecting his mature modernist ideals.
The building's name comes from the initials of its original owner, a musician who lived here. This connection between resident and architecture shows how Neutra tailored his designs to the people who would inhabit them.
The building sits on Kelton Avenue next to the Kelton Apartments, which Neutra designed as his personal residence. Visitors can view both houses from the street and compare the subtle differences in Neutra's design approaches for different purposes.
This was Neutra's final residential project in North Westwood Village, marking the end of a productive architectural phase in the area. After this project, Neutra shifted his activities to other parts of Los Angeles and beyond.
